Location: Sugarloaf Outdoor Center Carrabassett Valley, Maine (due to snow agenda was changed)
Conditions: A localized snowstorm over the western mountains dropped 5 inches of snow over just a couple of hours, but the open-air- ice-rink was open for people geared-up for skating. The snowfall over the ice created more fun as young skaters explored the fun of gliding. Dee was un-able to perform in such conditions and the original agenda was altered. Instead, a snowshoe experience was the perfect alternative for Dee and a few others.
Services: Dazzling as usual. The staff were amazingly pleasant when showing new folks how to strap on the gear and how to locate trails. A clean and comfortable lodge had food service available.
The trails were marked and nicely placed within the cross-country loops. The fresh snow was fun to treck over and the tree canopy offered a buffer from the steady wind and snowfall. Only a few people were out in the afternoon on the cross-country trails, leaving trails wide open for those reckless Nordic skier types. After a couple of hours off snowshoe fun and fitness it was time to head home over the slippery “S” turns of Carrabassett Valley. Sure enough, cars were off the road and in snowbanks. Kudos to the two men in the blue truck who were pulling people out and lending a helping hand.
Skate Scene, Inc. is excited for next winter and more winter adventures. Come join us.
Highlights of the "Skate in Faith" event on February 20th 2021 (1:00 – 3:00 pm)
Location: Sugarloaf Outdoor Center at the Open-Air-Ice-Skating Rink in Carrabassett Valley, Maine (Route 27 Western Maine area)
Conditions: The weather was perfect for outdoor ice skating. Dry air and no head wind blowing on over the ice rink. Outdoor firepits were sparked-up to warm people as they moved between the trails to the ice rink. A touch of light snow over the surfaced ice was no problem as a mix of gentle, hockey puck passing and general family fun skaters exercised around.
Services: Dazzling facilities with new rest rooms, food for sell (take-out encouraged due to C0VID -19 precautions) good rental equipment with encouraging staff members guiding enthusiastic outdoor minded folks. Lots of free parking for people wanting to do cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, fat tire biking or ice skating. (Must pay to participate on trails or rink.) Sledding also available for free with large L.L. Bean saucers for those who are not afraid of busting-their-backbones. (View photo of Dee at the end of her sledding run—once was enough for her.)
